Icky Bean Winter

In the brutal winter of 1919, twelve-year-old Kata struggles to keep her Finnish-American family alive on a lonely South Dakota homestead after her father and older brother leave to work in a far-away copper mine.

Haunted by her "Worst Mistake Ever," Kata is determined to prove she has the sisu-the courage and grit-her father doubts she possesses.

But when hunger, a timber wolf, and crushing hardship threaten everything her family has worked so hard to create, Kata must discover whether she's brave enough to help her family take root in its beautiful, sometimes brutal home.
